Derry~Londonderry received a further endorsement today with Cultural Olympiad announcing a series of events to be staged in the city and region in 2012 in the run up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A major concert delivered by Peace One Day and a coastal installation by Deborah Warner will become part of the city’s event programme during 2012 creating a showcase of music and spoken word.
Declan McGonagle, interim chair of Culture Company 2013 welcoming the announcement saying: “Working with international artists such as Deborah Warner, Jude Law and Jeremy Gilley will demonstrate the city’s appeal as a world class location for events and bring together local and international partnerships to deliver a significant international profile for the area and provide rich cultural experiences for the people of the city”.
Derry City Council, Strategic Investment Board and Ilex URC are working in partnership to shape the growing number of opportunities being presented to the city.
Welcoming the announcement of the international programme of events, Caoimhin Corrigan, Cultural Broker, Ilex urban regeneration company said: “We’re delighted that the Cultural Olympiad recognises the energy and potential of the city region and has chosen Derry ~ Londonderry as the place to launch the 2012 Cultural Olympiad festival. It’s great to have such a major global concert signed up for the new city square at Ebrington at such an early stage”.
Oonagh McGillion, on behalf of Derry City Council said: “We’ve always recognized the importance of bringing events to the city during 2012 to create a sense of build-up while creating capacity for staging such events in the city during 2013. These events demonstrate strong connections to London 2012 and advance our legacy of developing international partnerships and opportunities for the city and region”.
