The schools might be getting ready to open their gates for a new term as August comes to a close but the coming Bank Holiday Weekend in Derry gives you one last chance to enjoy some summer fun with a fantastic programme of events on offer.
Among the activities on offer is the superb City of Derry Guitar Festival which gets underway today (Friday) and runs all weekend within the beautiful grounds of the University of Ulster Magee Campus.
This unique festival is an offering to all music lovers; who will have the opportunity to attend concerts from the likes of Amanda Cook, Trio Campanella, Carlos Bonell and Sam Woods and Murphy, participate in master classes, workshops, ensembles. Check out the festival website on www.cityofderryguitarfestival.com for more information.
Also for music lover there’s a free concert right in the heart of the city centre on Saturday when Guildhall Square will play host to Creative Village.
Creative Village is a new project designed to nourish the city’s creative performers under the direction of film actress and chanteuse Bronagh Gallagher. From midday on Saturday and range of bands and performers such as The White Mountain Band, John Deery and the Heads and Bronagh herself will be playing. Logon on to the Creative Village website at www.creative-village.info for a full list of performers and times.
This weekend also sees the Foyle Pride festival reach its crescendo with Derry’s first ever Pride Parade departing from the railway station on the Waterside at 2pm and making its way to Guildhall to join with Creative Village. Foyle Pride events continue across the weekend including a family event ‘And Tango Makes Three’ at Café Del Mundo on Saturday afternoon and The Pride Ball, also at Café Del Mundo, on Saturday night. For those who are interested in shopping with a twist, the city’s first vintage market, Bedlam, will open its doors on Saturday. Situated in the Old City Glass works building on Great James Street the Bedlam weekend market is open from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 1pm to 5pm on Sunday and will be offering all things vintage and retro.
Away from the vibrant bustle of our thriving city, nature lovers have a chance to feast their eyes upon the eleven hectares of gloriously coloured wildflowers which grace Burntollet Wood each summer. Owners the Woodland Trust are inviting visitors to take part in a guided woodland walk on Saturday 28 at 11am.
So whether it’s an idyllic walk in the countryside, learning Hendrix riffs at Magee, enjoying free music in the city centre or rummaging through the city’s first vintage market, Derry offers something for all tastes this weekend.
