Then Taoiseach, Mr Brian Cowen TD, gave his support to the bid by Derry to become the UK City of Culture in 2013 during the campaign stage of the process.
The former Taoiseach said: “Derry and its hinterland have a rich and varied cultural history. In troubled times, the city demonstrated a real spirit and a drive to overcome adversity. That spirit has been harnessed by the entire community in supporting the City of Culture bid.
“The city is now looking resolutely to the future. If the bid is successful, Derry and the wider North West region will have a golden opportunity to showcase the vibrancy of its cultural life, and its enduring warmth and vitality, to a huge audience - not just in these islands but around the world.
“I have no doubt that Derry would prove itself an extremely worthy winner. I wish the bid team, and the people of the city, all the best”.
