One of the Derry’s brightest young musicians believes that a successful bid to become UK City of Culture 2013 would create massive opportunities for young talent in the city.
Fourteen-year-old, Meadbh McGinley is one of the city’s most promising performers, an accomplished pianist, singer and composer who has already won numerous competitions locally, nationally and internationally.
Meadbh recently featured on the Late, Late Show and is managed by Andrew Monk. She has performed around the world including at the Palace of Westminster, and studied under some of the leading figures in the world of classical music. She understands that successful City of Culture bid would provide a fantastic platform for up and coming musicians like her.
“If the bid is successful, I will be presented with many opportunities to perform in the city, which is fantastic. As well as being able to bring my music to a local audience, I will be able to take advantage of the increased opportunities that will arise for my music to be heard by a much wider audience too”.
Oonagh McGillion, Temporary Director of Development with Derry City Council, underlined the benefits that talents like Meadbh will enjoy if the bid is successful.
“Each year we attract over 600,000 visitors and participants to our existing cultural venues, events and festivals the city, which generates in excess of £11million, but we know this can be built upon. With the creation of additional performance space for both local and international talent, 2013 could prove to be an excellent opportunity for us to showcase to the world the high standard of musicians like Meadbh that this city has”.
Although Meadbh is still at school, she ultimately hopes to become a conductor and someday conduct her own compositions. The opportunities the City of Culture will bring will undoubtedly help her on her way.
