Emmy award-winning actor, Brendan Gleeson has become the latest cultural icon to lend their support to Derry-Londonderry’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2013.
The star of hit Hollywood movies such as Braveheart, Gangs of New York and the Harry Potter films believes that the city has the depth of cultural resources that make it the perfect venue to be awarded the designation. “I would like to voice my support for Derry’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2013. While Derry is the fourth largest city in Ireland, it has more cultural venues than anywhere else on the island, relatively speaking,” he said.
Gleeson is currently featuring in cinema’s in the hit film Perrier’s Bounty says the fact the city is already in the process of implementing a regeneration plan means it will be the a fertile valley for propagating cultural activity should its bid prove successful.
“The fact the regeneration plan currently underway puts arts and culture at the heart of the city development is very exciting. Arts bring people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs together in a creative, nurturing environment and the City of Culture Designation would provide endless opportunities to further explore and exploit the many talents of the people. Derry has emerged from the shadow of its recent past and now deserves to shine. I wish the city well with the bid process,” he said.

Derry-Londonderry will submit its final bid at the end of May 2010, and the winner of UK City of Culture 2013 will be announced in the summer.
